Relationship between serum irisin levels and carotid intima-media thickness

    • AIM To study the relationship between serum irisin levels and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT). METHODSEnrolled in this study were 193 subjects from Xijing Hospital. Clinical data were collected and fasting serum irisin concentrations were detected with ELISA method. Subjects were divided into two groups by results of bilateral carotid ultrasonography: IMT normal group and IMT thickening group (IMT normal group: IMT <0.8 mm, IMT thickening group: IMT≥0.8 mm). The relationship between serum irisin concentration and IMT values was analyzed using multiple statistical methods. RESULTSSerum irisin levels were significantly reduced in IMT thickening group. Pearson’s partial correlation analyses showed a negative correlation between serum irisin levels and IMT (r=-0.505, P<0.01). Multiple stepwise linear regression analysis showed that serum irisin levels, LDL-C, TG, WHR, BNP and FBG were significantly associated with IMT. CONCLUSIONSerum irisin levels are negatively correlated with IMT and significantly associated with IMT.
