Effect of fasudil on inflammatory factors in serum and gingival crevicular fluid in patients with coronary heart disease and periodontitis

    • AIM To explore the effect of fasudil on inflammatory cytokine interleukin 10 (IL-10) and interleukin-18 (IL-18) in serum and gingival crevicular liquid in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and periodontitis. METHODSWe selected hospitalized patients with CHD and periodontitis and randomly divided the patients into two groups: treatment group and control group. The treatment group was given intravenous drip of fasudil (30 mg bid) in addition to the routine treatment for 2 weeks. Before and after treatment, we examined the oral cavity and collected the gingival crevicular fluid and venous blood. IL-10 and IL-18 in gingival crevicular fluid and serum in both groups were analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTSAfter fasudil treatment, IL-18 levels in the gingival fluid and serum of patients in the treatment group significantly decreased and IL-10 levels were significantly increased (P<0.05) compared with those in the control group. CONCLUSION Fasudil can effectively reduce the level of inflammatory factors in the gingival fluid and serum of patients with coronary heart disease and periodontitis.
