Effects of interventional procedures on congenital ventricular septal defect residual shunt
-
Abstract
AIM:To assess the effect of interventional procedure on residual shunt after surgical repair of ventricular septal defect. METHODS: Eighteen patients (aged 3-46 years, mean age 135±110 years) were included in the study. Diameter of the residual shunt was 3-8 mm [mean (421±148) mm]. Residual shunts were closed by building orbit. Contrast examinations of the left ventricle were performed to evaluate the immediate results 15 min after the closure and echocardiography was performed 1 day and 3 months after the closure to decide whether there was residual. RESULT: Except for two cases (one case with too large of a diameter of residual shunt and one case with difficulty of building orbit), the interventional procedure was successful in the other 16 cases. CONCLUSIONS: Transcatheter closure of postoperative septal residual is safe and effective.
