Correlation between left ventricular ejection fraction and total cholesterol in dilated cardiomyopathy

    • AIM To investigate the correlation between left ventricular ejection fraction and serum total cholesterol in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and to provide an index for the emergence of heart failure. METHODSOne hundred and twenty-three patients with dilated cardiomyopathy were divided into two groups: LVEF >40% group (n=34) and LVEF ≤40% group (n=89). General information and biochemical data of serum were collected, and the cardiac structure and functions were determined by echocardiogram and compared. RESULTSPatients in the LVEF>40% group were younger than LVEF≤40% group (P<0.05). Total cholesterol in LVEF>40% group was significantly higher than in LVEF≤40% group (P<0.05). Total cholesterol was positively related to LVEF (r=0.287, P<0.01). CONCLUSIONTotal cholesterol may serve as a helpful predictor of heart failure.
