    A case-control study of H-type hypertension and stroke in Xi’an area

    • AIM To study the relationship between H-type hypertension and stroke in Xi’an area. METHODSA case-control study was designed and 400 consecutive inpatients in the Department of Neurology, Ninth Hospital of Xi’an were enrolled. Patients were divided into two groups (case and control) according to stroke diagnosis. Data were analyzed and compared between groups including age, gender, educational level, body mass index (BMI), marital status, occupation, cigarette smoking, alcohol, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, H-type hypertension, family history of stroke, family history of heart disease, and social characteristics. RESULTSStroke was negatively correlated with older age, male gender, low educational level, intellectual occupation, cigarette smoking, hypertension, H-type hypertension, family history of stroke, and family history of heart diseases. OR values of family history of stroke and heart diseases in parents were higher than those of other relatives. Hypertension, low educational level, introversion, and cigarette smoking were correlated with moderate/severe stroke. CONCLUSIONHypertension, H-type hypertension, parental history of stroke, and parental history of heart diseases are risk factors for stroke. Low educational level, introversion, cigarette smoking, and hypertension are risk factors for moderate/severe stroke in the Xi’an area.
