Correlating factors of insulin resistance in essential hypertension and its relation to arterial elasticity

    • AIM: To explore the relation between arterial elasticity and the correlate factors of insulin resistance in essential hypertension. METHODS: Five indices, namely, arterial elasticity, blood pressure, glucose and lipid metabolism, erythrocyte intracellular magnesium level and erythrocytes were analyzed in 112 patients with essential hypertension. RESULTS: A positive correlation was observed between insulin sensitivity and large artery elasticity indices (C1) as well as small artery elasticity indices (C2), whereas insulin sensitivity and arterial elasticity indices exhibited a negative correlation with blood pressure, body mass index, serum levels of triglyceride and erythrocyte intracellular magnesium level. CONCLUSION: Arterial elasticity in essential hypertension is correlated with insulin resistance.
