Abstract
AIM To observe the effects of atorvastatin on atrial and pulmonary vein electrical activity. METHODS Fourteen dogs were randomly divided into the control group (n=7) and the atorvastatin group (n=7), and atorvastatin was administered orally (2 mg/kg/day) 4 weeks before operation. The atrial effective refractory period (AERP) and pulmonary vein effective refractory period (AERP) were determined. RESULTS Atorvastatin group had a longer AERP and a longer AERP rate adapting feature. In induced atrial fibrillation, the atorvastin group had a lower rate than the control group. CONCLUSION Atorvastatin effectively improves the atrial electrical activity and reduces the occurrence and recurrence of atrial fibrillation.
