Relationship between atrial fibrillation and acute myocardial infarction with mitral regurgitation

    • AIM:To explore the relationship between atrial fibrillation (AF) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with ischemic mitral regurgitation (MR). METHODS: Clinical data of 269 consecutive patients with AMI were retrospectively analyzed. Patients with known AF and intrinsic valve disease were excluded. Study patients were divided into two groups based on the degree of MR diagnosed by echocardiography: no MR (Group A) and MR (Group B). AF was diagnosed by electrocardiogram or monitoring at any time during the hospital stay. RESULTS: According to results of analysis, Group A included 165 patients and Group B included 104 patients. The number of newly developed cases of AF was 15 (9.1%) patients and 22 (21.2%) patients, respectively, in Group A and Group B (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: There is a close association between AF and AMI with MR.
