Correlation of serum parathyroid hormone levels and chronic right heart failure

    • AIM To evaluate correlation between serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) and chronic right heart failure (HF). METHODS A total of 154 consecutive patients with chronic right HF were enrolled in this investigation. A multiple logistic regression model was used to analyze whether PTH levels were independently related to chronic right heart HF and partial correlation analysis was conducted to demonstrate the relevance of PTH levels and right heart function parameters. RESULTS The levels of serum PTH in right HF group were statistically higher than those in the control group. After adjustment for predictors of right HF, serum PTH levels were associated with an odds ratio of 1.066 for right HF (95%CI 1.030-1.102, P=0.000). Serum PTH levels had correlation with plasma N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide levels, right ventricular end-diastolic diameter, tricuspid valve reverse flow and edema degree of lower limbs (P<0.05 or P<0.01). CONCLUSION The serum level of PTH has correlation with right HF.
