Establishment by balloon occlusion and MRI identification of porcine model of acute myocardial infarction

    • AIM: To establish a porcine model of acute myocardial infarction by balloon occlusion and to assess whether the model was successfully built using MRI. METHODS: Twelve mini-pigs were used in the experiment. After anesthesia, the balloon catheter was positioned at 0. 5-1. 0 cm below the first diagonal branch of left anterior descending branch and occluded for 90 min until the electrocardiogram confirmed that myocardial infarction occurred. The models underwent myocardial perfusion delay scan with MR True Fisp-PSIR and HE staining. RERULTS: Ten of 12 mini-pigs underwent successful induction of AMI. In the myocardial perfusion delay scan with T1 WI double inverted sequence, ventricular septum presented a half-moon low signal. HE staining showed light dye of distal myocardial nuclei of blocking blood vessels and cytoplasm was dissolved. CONCLUSION: Coronary artery balloon occlusion is a simple and safe approach to establish the myocardial infarction model. MRI can directly display the infarction area, tissue edema and cardiac function changes.
