Role of thiamine in cardiovascular diseases
-
Abstract
Thiamine is an essential water-soluble vitamin and thiamine deficiency can affect multiple systems including metabolic, neurologic, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal systems. Thiamine supplementation may reduce the incidence of adverse events in cardiovascular disease. This article reviews the physiology and metabolic transport of thiamine, risk factors, diagnostic and therapeutic treatment and the relevant role of thiamine in cardiovascular disease.
